Spinal Aspiration


Spinal aspiration involves the placement of a needle into the disc space with aspiration & washings in an attempt to gain enough sample to evaluate for the possibility of disc infection. A small-caliber long needle is used and placed under Fluoroscopic or CT Guidance.

CPT CODE:- 
62267 Percutaneous aspiration within the nucleus pulposus, intervertebral disc, or paravertebral tissue for diagnostic purposes.

Note: For imaging, use 77003.
(Do not report 62267 in conjunction with 10022, 20225,62287, 62290,62291)

1. Sample Report:-

CT-guided aspiration

History:
Patient with recent MRI findings suggestive of discitis at L3-L4.
A biopsy is requested.
Procedure in detail:
After informed consent was obtained from the patients family, with
risks and benefits explained, including risks of bleeding, infection,
unexpected operation, morbidity, and mortality, the patient was placed
prone on the CT table.
The patient's back was sterilely prepped and draped.
Local anesthesia was infiltrated, and then, under direct CT guidance,
a 5F sheath needle was advanced from a paraspinal approach into the
L3-4 intervertebral disc. 3 cc of fluid was obtained. Materials were
sent for microbiologic analysis.
The patient tolerated the procedure well with no immediate
complication.
Conclusion: CT-guided aspiration of L3-4 disc as described above.
There were no immediate complications from the procedure.
