AMERICAN HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION was established in 1928 by the American College of surgeons to maintain a medical record, the name it has the American Association of Medical Record Librarians (AAMRL).

Afterward, in 1970 they changed the name to American Medical Record Association (AMRA). In 1991 the association adopted its current name as American health information Management Association.
